Torus-ring-bus connected highly parallel processor

A cluster structure interconnection network for massively parallel computers is proposed. Each processor is connected to a one-dimensional ring-bus network in a cluster, and each cluster is connected to a two-dimensional torus network. Basic network performance is estimated by software simulations for two communication patterns, namely, nearest neighbor communication and general communication. The architecture of a prototype machine that is being built is shown. It consists of 64 processors. For a trade-off between the wiring cost and the network performance, emphasis was placed on reducing the wiring cost. Nevertheless, 29K of speed-up was estimated on a 32K processor system for a 3-D fluid simulation problem.<
