A novel computational approach to detect isolated and continuous phase in structured materials

In this paper, a novel simple algorithm based on geometrical considerations is proposed to identify and classify in three-dimensional images phases which are interconnected or isolated. The approach is tested on two types of materials - composite reinforced with different fractions of spherical ceramic particles and nuclear graphite with different contents of porosity. The fraction of continuous phase are in good agreement with percolation threshold, which validates the approach
