10 Mbps to 155 Mbps ATM using the IDT SARAM/sup TM/ as a concentrator Brouter core

Datacom and Telecom bandwidth requirements have recently been increasing. ATM is allowing for the increased bandwidth to become possible. Since ATM is a switching technology, the uninterrupted transfer of data, video and voice can be transferred and pieced back together without gaps introduced into the streams. Over time, current data formats will be converted to the ATM format nitially starting with the backbone of the WANs, and soon implemented within the LANs. The LAN movement will require the 10 Mbps Ethernet conversion to the 155 Mbps ATM of the WANs which this paper demonstrates in the form of a Brouter. The Brouter allows for the concentration of multiple 10 Mbps ports to the 155 Mbps ATM port. This ATM Brouter example illustrates a cost effective solution for a network site of four 10 Mbps E-Net users per interface card. The 10 Mbps Users would have a reasonable but lower level ATM connection bandwidth of 10 Mbps tied together to permit the multiple data transmissions simultaneously while concentrated to a higher bandwidth of 155 Mbps ATM. The ATM Brouter example shows the bandwidth and design simplification obtainable through the use of Integrated Device Technology's SARAM component. The lDT70825 SARAM accomplishes the high bandwidth and logic integration through IDT's custom high speed CMOS technology which permits a true simultaneously dual-ported SRAM.<
