Detection of shallowly buried dielectric objects with microwave radiometers

Problems of the detection of shallowly buried dielectric objects with subsurface radars and with microwave radiometers are analyzed. The difference approaches for detection with microwave radiometers is suggested. For the diminishing of the multireflections between antenna and soil surface this interspace is filled by the soft medium with permittivity close to soil permittivity (in the form of flexible strips, fibers for example). In special cases of the low contrast object detection the soil is wetted. The radar invisible objects can be made visible in this approach. Additionally broadband noise signal is used to increase the detection possibilities of radiometric method. Experimental results are presented which confirm the expediency of the proposed approaches. Some of the proposed approaches can be used for subsurface active radar detection.<
