Effects of image smoothing on the reliability of motion estimation

The effects of image smoothing on the accuracy and the measuring range of motion estimation algorithms are analyzed, and a new efficient method of image smoothing is proposed. The performances of motion estimation algorithms are closely related to the shape of the cross-correlation function (CCF) of the consecutive frames. The authors' concern is to widen the main lobe of CCF. To do this, several image smoothing schemes are adopted, and their effects are investigated by computer simulation.<>
