The development of LRT signal control techniques for the Sheffield Supertram system

The Sheffield Supertram system is a new light rail transit (LRT) system which is currently in the process of construction, and Phase 1 of the scheme is now in full operation. Although the system is partly constructed along an old railway formation, the new trackwork is used throughout the system, on an alignment specially designed for LRT operation. Of particular significance for the signalling arrangements is the fact that about half of the 21 miles of track is designed for full on-street operation where the tram must in many instances run in mixed traffic conditions, often without segregation from other traffic. In these circumstances, the signal design brief for DBS Consultancy was to provide the maximum priority for Supertram, whilst minimising the effect of any resultant delays on other road users. Additionally, a review of priority facilities currently available on UK signal controllers quickly led to a view that new facilities would have to be developed. This was considered necessary in order to provide the flexibility and efficiency of control strategies to comply with the requirements for the Sheffield Supertram system.<
