On self-shattering of toughened glass insulators

Self-shattering of toughened glass insulators has a direct bearing on the security and reliability of transmission lines. A comprehensive study of factors affecting self-shattering both in service and during tests, such as glass chemical homogeneity, toughening stress degree and distribution, and electrical insulating property, is reported. Measures taken to lower the self-shattering rate are described. They have been shown to be effective in service.<>
