Flight control system design using dynamic output feedback via the genetic algorithm

This paper describes a methodology whereby the genetic algorithm (GA) is used in the design of a dynamic, robust controller for an output feedback flight control system using a novel technique. The technique involves, first, selecting a desired eigenstructure for the aircraft which conforms to various handling qualities requirements. This eigenstructure is then projected into the linear quadratic regulator subspace, which is constrained by the unavailability of several system states. This projection is achieved using the genetic algorithm. The goal is to produce a robust eigenstructure assignment controller utilising only output feedback. If this constant gain feedback strategy is insufficient then it is possible to increase available design freedom by the inclusion of dynamic output feedback.<
