Implementation and performance-scaling issues concerning the genetic programming of a cellular automata based artificial brain

This paper discusses some implementation and performance scaling issues concerning the growth/evolution of a cellular automata based artificial brain, called CAM-Brain. The essential conclusion of this paper is that it will be possible to evolve an artificial brain containing a billion artificial neurons, by the year 2001, the final year of the CAM-Brain research project. CAM-Brain will offer a powerful new tool investigate the virgin field "incremental evolution", i.e. "How is it possible to evolve a complex artificial brain in steps?", alternatively, "How does one add neural modules to an already functional artificial nervous system, so that its functionality is increased?".<>
