Integrating video and information transport into survivable interoffice networks

This paper proposes an interoffice network architecture that integrates video/information transport and passive optical protection using a photonic ring design which employs periodic optical amplification and wavelength-division multiflexing. We present an optical transmission model and simulation results for networks using different transmission formats for video/information. It is shown that excellent quality can be achieved for both video/information delivery and SONET protection traffic in both. The normal and the "protection-activated" states. Economic assessment shows the proposed design costs significantly less than the conventional design for protection and for an overlay network designed for video/information transport.<
