On the origins of muzzle voltage

For low voltage, nonarcing armatures, analysis of various contributions to muzzle voltage in railguns is presented. It is shown that there is an important contribution associated with the currents induced in the rails in front of the armature. This contribution becomes dominant as velocity increases. The role of muzzle voltage as a diagnostic tool for studying nonarcing contact properties is questioned.<
