"Rocky Water 93/10": in-situ measurements supported by satellite remote sensing and high resolution ocean modelling in near real time

"Rocky Water 93/10" was a major oceanographic experiment in Vestfjorden, Norway. The research vessel leading the in-situ measurements had near real time access to analysed images from the radar satellite ERS-1 and to current, salinity, and sea temperature predictions from a high resolution (4 km) ocean circulation model. Interesting ocean features were observed in several ERS-1 passes, but the satellite images could not give the desired information on a certain critical day of the experiment. The ocean circulation model provided 48 hours prognosis every 12 hours, and was much help for directing the resources during the experiment.<
