Power electronics for transport aircraft applications

This paper uses 1992 air traffic statistics and the projected secondary power requirements for future air transport opportunities for power electronics technology. The secondary power energy requirements for present transport are compared to the projected energy needs of future transport aircraft and are related to the payload. The role of power electronics in future transport aircraft is discussed with respect to system architecture, power management, and engine starting. The opportunities for new power electronics applications are shown with an emphasis on cost/benefit for the airlines, passengers, and regulatory agencies.<
