Multivariable modelling for buildings

The paper present encouraging results as regards the application of model-based control methods to the built environment. The work has extended earlier laboratory-scale studies by showing that the improvements seen are carried over to full-scale systems. We initiate a demonstration process by applying a model-based technique to control the temperature inside a full-scale experimental test room with dedicated heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) plant. These test cell studies have clearly shown the potential of advanced modelling and control applied to temperature control applications, and we continue this work to full-scale systems here. The specific objectives of the paper are: 1) to present a case for model-based control using test-cell results; 2) to apply the model-based method on a full-scale system; and 3) to compare the advanced control method against the traditional approach.<
