Design and implementation of a DNA Sequence Processor

The DNA Sequence Processor (SP) is a tool developed as an aid to the Malaria Genome Project at the University of Florida, as well as for any other large sequencing project conducted in a centralized multiuser DNA sequencing facility. The tool accepts sequences of DNA fragments, determined using an automated DNA sequencing machine, and processes them based on certain rules and parameters as specified by human experts. A remote service termed the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) was utilized by SP. SP performs several bookkeeping and project management functions, and generates a number of useful reports that can be viewed through a user-friendly graphical interface. Assets of SP include the classification of rejected sequences according to the reason for their rejection, and the creation of detailed logs documenting every step in processing each sequence.<
