A Mossbauer effect study of the dilute magnetic semiconductor Cd/sub 1-x/Fe/sub x/Te

The state of the Fe ions in the dilute magnetic semiconductors Cd/sub 0.97/Fe/sub 0.03/Te and Cd/sub 0.95/Fe/sub 0.05/Te has been determined using Mossbauer spectroscopy. The spectra show an evolution from a single line at 300 K to a sextet of broadened lines at 4.2 K. Analysis indicates that the iron is present as Fe/sup 2+/ ions and that the six line spectrum at 4.2 K is not magnetic but is composed of three separate quadrupole doublets. These occur as the cubic symmetry of the Fe/sup 2+/ site is removed by distortions caused by Fe substitution on neighbouring Cd sites.<
