32-bit computing: road to confusion?

Software engineers may easily feel perplexed over the multitude of operating systems that are now emerging for the 32-bit desktop environment. OS/2, NextStep, the Mac's operating system, and Unix have been around for years; NT is still fresh and needs to prove itself: and technology such as Taligent and Chicago (Windows 4.0) have yet to emerge. Each 32-bit operating system seems to be taking such a different approach that all the confusion about which will dominate isn't surprising. The author explores these trends.<
