Case studies of transhorizon propagation: reliability of predictions using radiosonde data

Presents a case study of transhorizon propagation, based on minisonde refractivity measurements and COST 210 signal strength data. This study is a test of the Parabolic Equation Method against real data, and an example of the possibilities now open for modelling anomalous propagation in clear air. The sensitivity of field-strength predictions to radiosonde errors is examined. Although a method like PEM can predict small scale features of the field in great detail if the refractivity structure is known exactly, it is shown that measurement errors lead to indetermination of the location of these features, and that field strength predictions should be seen as a stochastic phenomenon.<
