A new approach to protecting transmission systems with fault generated noise

This paper presents a new technique for the detection of fault generated noise by employing an alternative arrangement involving the use of conventional connected power line communications signal traps and capacitor voltage transformers. The line traps confine the higher frequency noise-generated signals to within the protected zone and the latter are then captured by specially designed stack tuners via the high voltage capacitor of the capacitor voltage transformer. This paper also reports the comparison of responses for faults at different fault inception angles. The paper concludes by presenting simulation results with EMTP relating to faults on 400 kV vertically constructed transmission lines and experimental work carried out in a laboratory. Arcing faults have also been investigated.<
