Implementation problems with nuclear power generation

This paper reviews some of the nontechnical implementation problems. This paper is based upon the experiences and observations of the author gained while working in the nuclear industry in the USA. Public perception of nuclear power is considered first. Next, political decisions, which are driven by public perceptions, are covered. The influence of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the government agency with regulatory control over the industry, is then considered. The initial approach and more recent trends used by utilities to deal with problems are reviewed. The role of vendors and the relationship with utilities and government regulation is considered.<
