A human factors view of new technology in nuclear power plant control rooms

Introducing new technology into the control rooms of existing and future nuclear power plants will involve the design and development of improved display and control systems and supporting software. It is likely to include the use of large displays for group viewing that mimic system operation, console CRT displays, touch panel interface devices, improved annunciator display systems, operator aiding techniques, some degree of automation, and reliance on digital technology. The programs, the technology that has been used successfully in a number of overseas plants, and some of the human factors issues that needs to be considered are addressed. Activities underway in the Electric Power Research Institute are described.<
