Controls and displays for Douglas Aircraft for the 1990s

The rapid changes occurring in the design of aircraft cockpits are presented. The development of cockpit and avionics integration at Douglas Aircraft and a Honeywell Air Transport Systems Division featured in the MD-11 is summarized. The authors then predict further improvements in the next decade, breaking down this technology into controls, sensors, displays, and formats. Examples of each are presented. Future research in this area is expected to enhance autonomous operations, optimize automation of crew workload, enable onboard mission replanning, and, in general, increase the pilot's situational awareness.<
