Seeing through the weather: enhanced/synthetic vision systems for commercial transports

Discussed are the potential benefits of enhanced/synthetic vision systems for commercial transports as well as their various levels of integration and possible associated capabilities. Work at Douglas Aircraft on enhanced/synthetic vision systems is noted. It is concluded that what is needed is a system approach which provides for a highly flexible mix and match family of enhanced/synthetic systems in the mid to late 1990s which can be easily custom tailored (expanded and contracted) to meet different needs for different air carriers, route structures, regional operations, fleet mixes, etc., and provides for future growth and cost-effective evolution into the highly integrated autonomous operations systems of the 21st century.<
