Study of Yb/sup +/ trapped in a RF trap with light buffer gas by irradiation with resonant light (frequency standards)

The characteristics of Yb/sup +/ held in a RF trap in the presence of a light buffer gas by irradiation with resonant light beams, including those for depleting the metastable state of the /sup 2/D/sub 3/2/ and /sup 2/F/sub 7/2/ states, are studied. Further investigation is made concerning the disappearance of ionic detection signals via RF resonance absorption by irradiation with the radiation driving the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ transition.<
