Improved nested-threshold-cell-discard buffer management mechanisms

Nested threshold cell discarding (NTCD) is a simple asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network congestion control mechanism, well suited for high-speed applications. Its drawback is that it can unnecessarily discard some cells. The authors propose two modifications of NTCD, called nested threshold cell discarding with suspended execution (NTCD/SE) and dual queue nested threshold cell discarding (DQ-NTCD), that overcome shortcomings of the original NTCD mechanism while retaining its benefits. Their performance is analyzed and compared with the NTCD. The results are obtained by means of discrete event simulation with sequentially controlled precision of steady-state estimates.<
