Designing model-based graphical presentations for dynamic environments: concepts and examples

The authors introduce the notion of model-based graphics for displaying information in dynamic environments. Unlike traditional graphical presentations, these graphics are designed specifically to support operators' information and knowledge acquisition behavior. A methodology for designing model-based graphics is described by introducing two models that a designer can use to identify different types of knowledge to be included in model-based graphical presentations. Two examples from the telecommunications domain illustrate how the methodology can be used to generate graphic displays to support network operators during alarm monitoring and troubleshooting.<
