Self-tuning control of the milling cutting process in industrial CNC machines

Adaptive control in machining systems leads to an increased production rate as well as tool breakage prevention. Nevertheless, most achievements in adaptive control for cutting processes are limited to laboratory environments; they are seldom to be implemented directly in CNC (computer numerical control) machines. By decoupling the whole machining system into the time-invariant servo system and the time-varying cutting process, a systematic approach to realizing self-tuning control in a personal computer along with the CNC controller is obtained. Experimental results have proved that this technique is feasible for manufacturing applications.<
