An input-output separation principle for observing and controlling spatially distributed systems

An input-output separation principle for spatially distributed systems is presented. Using this result, it is possible to develop an observer which reconstructs spatially distributed information from one measurement. Then a controller that uses all of this spatially distribution information to apply a control signal to one point or region can be designed separately. This approach, however, uses nonrational transfer functions rather than the more common state space approach.<
