High resolution spectrum estimation

A new approach to improve the frequency resolution of parametric power spectrum estimation for signals with rational power spectra is proposed. Specifically, the effect of errors in the calculated autocorrelation values is reduced by using a double autocorrelation procedure. The numerical solution of the resulting Yule-Walker equations is carried out by the forward and backward linear predictor method of L. Marple (1980). This algorithm gives good results even when the poles are closely spaced and the sensitivity to calculated autocorrelation error is acute without resorting to pole manipulation, as suggested by M.J. Villalba and B.K. Walker (1989). Another algorithm using the results of Slutsky's sinusoidal limit theorem is proposed in addition to the double autocorrelation procedure.<
