Nondistributed multiparty connection establishment for broadband networks

The authors present two approaches for the multiparty connection establishment procedure, used to set up end-to-end physical connections for data transfer, in broadband integrated service digital network (BISDN) signaling systems. In these systems, the connection may include more than two members, as for video conferencing; the requested bandwidth may differ for different traffic requirements; and the terminal types of end stations may be incompatible, as for NTSC and HDTV. These requirements complicate the connection finding and the connection establishment procedure. The authors focus on the connection establishment control and propose two connection management procedures: a threading approach and a concurrent approach which are based on a centralized connection finding scheme. A brief comparison between these approaches is also provided. The concurrent approach will outperform the threading approach in response time, when the traffic load is light. In the heavily loaded situation, the threading approach will be better.<
