Open network architecture: an 'OAM' perspective-an RBOC's view

The impact of the open network architecture (ONA) on OAM (operations, administration, and management) is discussed from the perspective of a regional Bell Operation Company. The aggregate impact of requests on ordering and provisioning, billing, and maintenance and repair are considered. The impact of requests for specific network functionalities on OAM systems is also discussed. It is concluded that ESP (enhanced service provider) requests for OAM functionality will increase the demand for enhanced services and thus network usage and revenues. These factors, as well as economics, public policy, and regulation, will be the drivers of OAM evolution.<
