Optimum carrier-to-interference ratio and cluster size for high-rate data packet transmission

An optimum average carrier-to-interference ratio (C/I) and an optimum cluster size for data packet transmission using QPSK and GMSK, assuming several reasonable conditions for future high bit-rate cellular radio systems, are presented. The criterion of optimality adopted is to maximize the probability of instantaneous C/I being larger than a certain threshold, which is dependent on a specific modulation scheme, per carrier per unit cell, assuming both C and I are subject to independent Rayleigh distribution. The analysis is expected to be useful in designing an integrated voice/data packet transmission systems.<
