Driver training: the use of simulators

The author describes how the decision to use simulators for training drivers for Networker One EMUs was based on four clearly identified needs of the training department:- (1) conversion training of competent drivers; (2) basic training of new entrants; (3) training drivers to handle emergency situations; and (4) numerical assessment of drivers' performance. These needs were reinforced by a number of other requirements, including the new technology of Networkers compared to existing rolling stock; the number of drivers to be trained; the short delivery programme and timescale for introduction of Networkers; and the restrictions placed on training on a busy inner suburban railway.<
