Static electrification properties of transformer oil

The insulating oil in a power transformer is a key ingredient in the charge separation process. Charging tendency measurements on available transformer oils show that oils differ in their charging tendency depending on the crude, refining process and the presence of contaminants. Drying out, aging, and temperature rise generally increase the charging tendency. The factors that influence charging tendency are examined, and certain remedial measures are suggested.<
