An example of artificial oculomotor behavior

The authors formalize artificial oculomotor behavior based on saccades and smooth pursuit to be used when detecting or tracking moving targets and during artificial head motion. Two degrees of freedom are used in synergy. They develop here the oculomotor layers of such a system: the visual layers of this sensory-motor reflex are assumed to be provided. Contrary to previous approaches, the different behaviors are generated from a single mechanism using a statistical observer and a suboptimal controller. Simulations results and experimental data are provided.<
