Laser based 3D surface mapping for manufacturing diagnostics and reverse engineering

Laser-triangulation-based surface mapping has been used in a limited number of applications for many years, both for reverse engineering and manufacturing diagnostics. The history of these systems is outlined. Machines are becoming available that can be used to accurately scan small to medium size parts, generate a dense surface map of the part shape, and create a CAD data file describing the part in the form of splines or geometric primitives. Examples of currently available laser triangulation systems that are applicable to electronics product and reverse engineering are presented, along with a description of their specifications, limitations, and potential for future development.<
