Plumbing the depths-telemetry and telecontrol in offshore oil installations

The offshore oil and natural gas development to be found in the Arabian Sea, about 200 km west of Bombay is operated by the Oil & Natural Gas Commission of the Government of India. The communications between platforms and the control centre need to be sophisticated, accurate over long distances, multi-level and robust. The author discusses the telemetry and telecontrol systems for this complex. In particular the remote terminal units, the master station, the multi-channel FDM-FM UHF radio links between the remote well platforms and the master station, and the digital microwave links between adjacent complexes.<
