Biomedical engineering research strategies in the US

The socioeconomic and political climates influencing biomechanical engineering research in the United States are discussed. The many factors that influence the research environment, strategies, and directions in the United States are also discussed. The roles of the National Institutes of Health (NIM) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) in supporting biomedical engineering are reviewed. Since the strategies of such agencies have an impact on the directions individual investigators take in their own research programs, some of the specific areas identified as priorities by NIH and NSF are examined.<
