S.O. Rice and the theory of random noise: some personal recollections

A short personal account is given of the author's long association with S.O. Rice and their common interests in noise modelling and nonlinear processing. This association started during World War II and continued until Rice's death. Some personal history is provided, and the early and continuing influence of Rice's work, particularly his Mathematical Analysis of Random Noise (see Bell Syst. Tech. J., vol.23, p.282-332, July 1944; vol.24, p.46-156, Jan. 1945) on the author's research in noise modelling, scattering, and signal processing is traced. Selected references, recent and older, are included to illustrate this stimulation and influence.<
