Revision of the Department of Transport specification MCG 0500-type approval of equipment and systems for the control of vehicle and pedestrian traffic on roads other than motorways

Traffic signal equipment and systems in the UK must be of a type approved by the Secretary of State for Transport. The procedures by which type approval may be sought are set out in the Department's specification MCG 0500. These procedures were last reviewed in the early 1970s. The paper concerns a review of the procedures aimed at meeting the needs to allow and encourage more innovation by industry; to reduce the risk of unsatisfactory equipment being marketed; to take account of maintenance of equipment by parties other than the original manufacturers; and to ensure that all parties involved have a clear understanding of the type approval and its meaning.<
