Biosensors for industrial monitoring and control

A variety of biosensor configurations have been explored which may find applications ranging from fermentation monitoring and control of separation processes to shelf life prediction and quality assurance. Two general categories of biological components are distinguished: biocatalysts and bioreceptors. A range of physical and chemical transducers are available to monitor the biological recognition event and can be broadly classified into electrochemical, optical, thermal and piezoelectric devices. A number of examples where biosensors have been successfully applied to industrial monitoring and control are discussed.<
