High fidelity optical flow and stereo disparity determination based on early human vision

It has been known for some considerable time that the human visual system has what appear to be some quite remarkable properties. The author briefly summarises some of the most important facts before discussing some aspects of how he believes that optical flow and stereo can be processed together and by equivalent networks, such that both are automatically available together without any major combinatorial problem. The author then considers how, following from such basic early and local processing, it is possible to extract, very simply, such things as depth discontinuities, global flow and/or global stereo mismatch, local object flow and/or stereo disparities and, for temporal changes, instantaneous focus of expansion.<
