Modern LV/MV compact substation equipment in the Swedish network

For terminating cables into modern ring main units (RMU), a nonshielded termination called KAP is used in Sweden. One of the reasons for this is that the three-core MV cables, commonly used in Sweden, have sector-shaped conductors and cannot be connected with elbow connectors. The Swedish authorities do not regard the shielded elbow as safe to touch. Consequently, an elbow must always be equipped with a metal enclosure, and the resulting higher cost compared with KAP is not justified. Distribution pillars are used to connect LV service cables to the distribution network. The modern pillar is equipped with fuse-switches with a high degree of protection. Bigger switches-typically for 400 A-are also used in modern substations. Both busbars and switching devices comply with protection degree IP 2 and utilization category AC 23.<
