The use of line spectrum pairs for the production of pipe organ-like sounds

A method for generating pipe-organ like sounds using line spectrum pairs (LSPs) is presented. Techniques for introducing forms of randomness which are characteristics of acoustic instruments are described. The representation is extremely compact, allowing thousands of individual sounds to be specified for an instrument. In addition, the LSP parameters can be easily modified to allow an instrument to be voiced for a particular installation. The LSP values can also be modified during playback to produce subtle phase modulation of selected frequency components of the synthetic sound. Such variations from pipe to pipe and from cycle to cycle introduce an element of naturalness into the synthetic sound.<
