Improvements possible in testing standards for high-voltage circuit breakers: harmonization of ANSI and IEC testing

Discrepancies in interruption capability testing are discussed. When the latest editions of testing standards (IEC Publ. 56 and 427, ANSI C37.09 and C37.081) are applied in actual circuit-breaker testing, some shortcomings and lack of correspondence with stresses in actual networks are observed, especially with regard to the characteristics of SF/sub 6/ circuit-breakers. Measures to increase the confidence in testing are proposed.<
