Achieving employee safety-lessons from the railroad

The history of the first comprehensive employee railroad safety law in 1893 is discussed. Some of the occupational hazards that existed on both steamboats and railroads. and the economic concerns of management, are examined. The problem posed by inadequate freight train brakes, the development of air brakes, and the provisions of the legislation ultimately passed by Congress are discussed.<
