The clinical application of microcomputers in the treatment of patients with severe speech dysfunction

Reports on an investigation into the use of speech recognition systems coupled with high quality digitized speech recording in providing communication aids for patients with severe speech dysfunction secondary to brain damage. Commercially available speech boards are used to evaluate the practical problems in using a speech-driven voice prosthesis with brain damaged patients. The speech board interprets nonrecognizable vocalisations and translates them into digitized recognizable speech phrases. The limitations of such systems are discussed and methods of selection of patients for trials with such equipment are given.<
