Impact of mainlobe interference angular extent on adaptive beamforming

Adaptive beamformer performance against mainlobe interference is shown to significantly degrade when the interference has angular extent, even 0.005 beamwidths. Such angular extent can be caused by antenna rotation, antenna platform pitch or roll, or jammer motion. The degradation is shown to be sensitive to the interference power level. The impact on detection and angle of arrival estimation is addressed. Also, an interesting phenomenon that occurs in adaptive beamforming, when using shaded steering constraints, is presented.<
