Effective intelligent organizations: knowledge is not enough implications for information systems planning

The concept of the intelligent organization and the intelligent information system (IS) has intuitive appeal and face validity as one considers the next generation of systems as 'knowledge processing' systems rather than 'information processing' systems. The paper adopts the metaphor of the intelligent organization as 'manager', positing that the concept requires refinement along three dimensions to become operational: knowledge, abilities (skills), and mission (purpose, goals). The paper explores the implications of the ability dimension of the intelligent organization for IS planning. The paper concludes with suggestions for research.<
