The need for battery monitoring

The authors describe a portable battery monitoring system for monitoring battery cells in uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs). The system is capable of measuring, in a matter of seconds, float and discharge voltages of up to 768 cells in a single installation, and has the memory capacity to store battery data information on up to 100 separate sites. The system was additionally programmed with a mathematical model that will enable it to accurately determine the remaining battery capacity in a UPS system following a short discharge test. It is also equipped with remote interrogation and control facilities.<
